Gros Ventre or Shadow Mountain Free Scenic Drives Self-Catered DIY Hiking
1

Arrive, Set Up & Ease In

Gros Ventre Camp · Menor's Ferry · Mormon Row at golden hour
▾
Morning
Arrive in Jackson. Stop at Albertsons or Smith's for a full week of camp groceries — prices inside the park are steep and selection is thin. Fill the water jugs, ice the cooler, then drive north about 20 minutes to the Moose entrance.
💡 Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) is the only commercial airport inside a U.S. national park — you land already looking at the Grand.
Midday — pick your camp
Set up at Gros Ventre Campground — the park's largest, sitting in sagebrush flats along the Gros Ventre River, cottonwoods for shade, occasional bison wandering through at dusk. Book on recreation.gov; it accepts reservations.
Or, for free: head up Shadow Mountain, just east of the park in Bridger-Teton National Forest. Free dispersed camping (boondocking) with the Tetons standing in full view across the valley. This is where we usually camp — no fees, no reservations, and mornings that begin with the Grand catching the first light. See our videos on the destination page for the drive up and where to pull off.
🚙 Shadow Mountain Road is dirt and gravel — fine for most vehicles in dry weather, sloppy after rain. No water, no hookups. 14-day maximum stay on national forest land. Pack it in, pack it out.
Early Afternoon
Stop at the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center in Moose. Grab the park map, watch the 15-minute film about the range, and check the current wildlife closures.
Afternoon
Walk the Menor's Ferry Historic District — a short, level loop through the pioneer buildings and past the Chapel of the Transfiguration. The chapel is small enough to sit in for ten minutes; its picture window frames the Cathedral Group of the Tetons in place of an altarpiece.
Evening
Drive to Mormon Row for golden hour. The T.A. Moulton Barn against the Tetons is the most photographed barn in America for good reason — the light on those weathered planks turns amber about forty minutes before sundown. Cook dinner at camp after.
🌌 Grand Teton is a certified International Dark Sky Park — bring a blanket and lie back after the fire dies.
Estimated Day 1 Cost (per person) ~$65

Jenny Lake & Cascade Canyon

Boat shuttle · Hidden Falls · Inspiration Point · deep into the canyon
▾
Early Morning (6:30am)
Drive to South Jenny Lake and catch the first boat shuttle across ($20 round trip). Early boats have the trail nearly to yourselves; by mid-morning the queue stretches back through the parking lot.
⚠️ The boat shuttle does not take reservations — first come, first served.
Morning
From the west boat dock, hike to Hidden Falls (0.5 mi, gentle) and continue to Inspiration Point (another 0.5 mi with a 400 ft climb, some steps). The view opens across Jenny Lake to the Gros Ventre Range beyond — worth every switchback.
Midday
Continue up Cascade Canyon as far as time and legs allow. The canyon opens into a broad, U-shaped valley with the Grand rising behind you and a rushing creek beside you. Watch for pika on the talus and moose in the willow bottoms; keep bear spray accessible.
🥪 Packed lunch at the Forks (about 4.5 mi in) if you're up for the distance — it's one of the loveliest lunch spots in the park system.
Afternoon
Return via the boat shuttle. Take the one-way Jenny Lake Scenic Drive (5 mi paved) north on the way out — the pullouts along it give you the range from angles the main road cannot.
Evening
Camp dinner at Gros Ventre. Cottonwood leaves rattle. Coyotes practice their harmonies. The Milky Way sits directly over the range once your eyes adjust.
Estimated Day 2 Cost (per person) ~$40
3

Northern Range & Depart

Signal Mountain · Oxbow Bend · Snake River Overlook
▾
Morning
Break camp early. Drive north to the Signal Mountain Summit Road — 5 miles of paved switchbacks climbing 1,000 ft to a viewing platform that takes in the whole range, Jackson Lake, and the Snake River's slow bends through the valley.
Midday
Down to Oxbow Bend Turnout for Mount Moran's reflection in still water. Then Colter Bay Visitor Center — the David T. Vernon Indian Arts Collection inside is small but exceptional, and free with park entry.
Afternoon
Head south. One last stop at Snake River Overlook — the pullout Ansel Adams made famous in 1942. The Tetons sit exactly as he framed them; the cottonwoods below have grown tall enough now to change the composition, but the mountains are unchanged.
Estimated Day 3 Cost (per person) ~$25

💰 3-Day Cost Breakdown (Per Person)

Park Entry (7-day pass)$35
Gros Ventre campsite (2 nights @ $45)$90

💡 Budget Pro Tips

🏨

Moderate Lodge Stay

Sleep in a room with a picture window facing the range, eat well without spending fine-dining money, and add a guided float on the Snake and a professional wildlife tour to see what a good naturalist can find that you'd walk right past.

Jackson Lake Lodge or in-town Jackson Restaurant Dining Scenic Snake Float Guided Wildlife Tour
1

Check In & Snake River Float

Lodge arrival · scenic float · dinner in Jackson
▾
Late Morning
Check into Jackson Lake Lodge (mid-park, its 60-foot picture windows in the main lounge frame the Tetons like a painting) or Signal Mountain Lodge (lakeside cabins with private decks). If in-town suits you better, The Wort Hotel is historic and steps from Town Square, and Cowboy Village Resort offers well-priced cabin-style rooms.
💡 Jackson Lake Lodge does not have TVs or in-room air conditioning — this is by design. The evenings on the lodge terrace are the point.
Afternoon
Scenic float trip on the Snake River — Barker-Ewing or Solitude Float Trips both run 2 to 3 hour drifts (about $85 per person, no rapids, gentle enough for anyone). Guides call out bald eagles, moose, and beaver sign; the river bends give you the Tetons from angles no road allows.
Evening
Drive into Jackson for dinner. The Blue Lion serves elk tenderloin in a quiet garden setting; the Merry Piglets on Town Square is casual Tex-Mex, a Jackson institution. Walk the square after — the four antler arches on the corners are made from naturally shed elk antlers gathered by local Boy Scouts each spring.
Estimated Day 1 Cost (2 people) ~$550
2

Cascade Canyon & Jackson Town

Jenny Lake boat · deep canyon hike · Wildlife Art Museum
▾
Early Morning
Jenny Lake boat shuttle across, then Hidden Falls, Inspiration Point, and as far up Cascade Canyon as the day allows. The classic turn-back point is the Forks (about 4.5 mi in) — a shaded lunch spot where the canyon splits toward Lake Solitude and Hurricane Pass.
Midday
Packed lunch trailside. Watch for pikas hauling wildflowers into their talus dens — an unmistakable sound like a squeaky toy from the rocks.
Afternoon
Return to the lodge, rinse the trail dust off, then drive into Jackson. The National Museum of Wildlife Art (just north of town) holds a serious collection — Bierstadts, Remingtons, contemporary painters — and is easily missed by visitors who came for the mountains alone.
🎨 An hour at the Wildlife Museum will change how you look at the animals for the rest of the trip.
Evening
Dinner at Snake River Brewing (craft beer, best burgers in town) or the Silver Dollar Bar inside The Wort Hotel — a historic tavern with 2,032 uncirculated silver dollars inlaid into the bar top and live music most nights.
Estimated Day 2 Cost (2 people) ~$450
3

Guided Wildlife & Farewell

Sunrise tour · brunch · Mormon Row · depart
▾
Predawn
A professional guide picks you up in an outfitted van (spotting scopes, binoculars, coffee) for a 4-hour wildlife tour with EcoTour Adventures or Teton Science Schools. Sunrise is when the moose feed in the willow bottoms and bears finish their night's work; a good naturalist finds animals you'd drive right past.
🐻 About $150–$200 per person. Worth every dollar; you will remember these two hours more than most of the trip.
Midday
Brunch at Persephone Bakery (pastries in a garden courtyard, arrive early or wait) or Café Genevieve (a converted log cabin, biscuits and gravy that would make a Southerner reconsider).
Afternoon
Drive Antelope Flats and Mormon Row one last time — pull off for whatever bison herd or pronghorn crossing presents itself. Depart when the range has fully released you.
Estimated Day 3 Cost (2 people) ~$450

💰 3-Day Cost Breakdown (2 People)

Park Entry$35
Jackson Lake Lodge (2 nights @ ~$350)~$700
Snake River scenic float (x2)~$170
Guided wildlife tour (x2)~$300–$400
Jenny Lake boat shuttle (x2)$40
Restaurant meals~$300–$400
Total Estimate$1,545–$1,745

Luxury Retreat

The Tetons at their most private. All-suite lodging perched above the valley, a full day on private water with your own guide, a helicopter's view of the range, and dinners that treat local trout, elk, and huckleberry with the seriousness they deserve.

Amangani or Jenny Lake Lodge Private Fly-Fishing Helicopter or Hot Air Balloon Fine Dining
1

Arrive & Settle

Amangani or Jenny Lake Lodge · spa · fine dining debut
▾
Late Morning
Check into Amangani — all-suite, perched above East Gros Ventre Butte with 180° views of the range, an infinity pool that appears to spill toward the mountains, a serious spa. Or Jenny Lake Lodge, whose historic cabins sit at the base of the Tetons with an all-inclusive package that folds in five meals, horseback rides, and bike use.
🏨 Four Seasons Jackson Hole (Teton Village) is a third excellent choice — polished, ski-in feel, seasonal service.
Afternoon
Spa treatment (both Amangani and Four Seasons are notable), or a private guided nature walk with a Teton Science Schools naturalist — 2 to 3 hours in a quiet corner of the park most visitors never find.
Evening
Dinner at Glorietta (Italian, one of Jackson's most polished kitchens, wood-fired handmade pasta) or the Amangani grill facing the range as the light drops. If you're at Jenny Lake Lodge, its own dining room is the meal — a five-course prix fixe with mountain views out every window.
Estimated Day 1 Cost (2 people) ~$1,700
2

Private Water, Private Sky

Full-day fly-fishing · helicopter or balloon · Snake River Grill
▾
Early Morning
Full-day private fly-fishing on the Snake River (WorldCast Anglers or Reel Deal Anglers, roughly $650–$750 for two anglers with drift boat and guide). Cutthroat trout, dry-fly water, gear included, streamside gourmet lunch prepared by the guide.
🎣 The Snake's fine-spotted cutthroat is native only to this drainage — you cannot catch this exact fish anywhere else on earth.
Late Afternoon
Choose your sky. Wyoming Balloon Company runs sunrise hot air flights over the Teton Valley from Driggs, Idaho (~$395 per person, one hour aloft, champagne breakfast on landing). Fly Jackson Hole runs 30-minute helicopter tours over the range from Alpine ($400+ per person, more dramatic, more immediate).
🎈 The balloon flies at sunrise; the helicopter is more flexible on timing. Book the balloon into your schedule first if that's your preference.
Evening
Dinner at Snake River Grill — Jackson's most-loved fine dining room, in continuous operation since 1993, with a serious wine cellar and a kitchen that plates elk tenderloin, wild trout, and huckleberry desserts with genuine restraint.
Estimated Day 2 Cost (2 people) ~$2,100
3

Private Cascade Canyon & Farewell

Guided hike · trail picnic · spa · Jenny Lake dining room
▾
Morning
Private guided hike into Cascade Canyon with a Jenny Lake Lodge or Exum Mountain Guides naturalist. They know which turn of the creek the moose favor, where the pikas den, and the correct pace for the altitude — you cover more of the canyon than a solo party would in the same time.
Midday
Gourmet trail lunch at Lake Solitude or the Forks — packed by your lodge kitchen, unpacked with a view.
Afternoon
Farewell spa treatment. Or a slow browse through Jackson's galleries on and around Town Square — Trailside Galleries, Astoria Fine Art, Mountain Trails, and Diehl Gallery all take Western landscape and wildlife painting seriously.
Evening
Farewell dinner at the Jenny Lake Lodge dining room — a five-course prix fixe that pairs its own list of Idaho and Washington wines. Rocky Mountain trout, elk medallions, huckleberry crème brûlée. Windows out to the range going purple in the late alpenglow.
Estimated Day 3 Cost (2 people) ~$1,100

💰 3-Day Cost Breakdown (2 People)

Park Entry$35
Amangani suite or Jenny Lake Lodge (2 nights)~$2,400–$3,600
Private full-day fly-fishing~$650–$750
Helicopter or balloon (x2)~$800
Private guided hike~$500
Spa treatments (x2)~$400
Fine dining & wine~$500–$700
Total Estimate$5,285–$6,785
